Any takers for home-brew super hero gaming on Saturday, April 5? IO and I are DTG (down to game). The system would either be the 1984 "Marvel Super Heroes RPG" (sometimes called FASERIP) or one if its semi-clones, such as Icons or Masks. But probably FASERIP because I am too tired to digest new games.
Yes to FASERIP or Icons, no to this weekend unfortunately. I'll be at Maelstrom in Morristown. Hopefully you'll have this idea again soon.
FASERIP was fun! I am starting a "baby-steps" campaign page to store info, and I'll start a folder or something.
Glad it went well, so that there'll be a second session and I can make it. Please stick with FASERIP, at least till I get to try it. Happy to do chargen ahead of time if the keeps from slowing down the game. Although even happier taking a pregen.
John, just to make sure we're communicating, we're kind of making up the super hero world as we go along, so the pre-gens wouldn't be folks like Batman or Nightcrawler or whoever. They'd be whatever notions we've had in our heads as funky super hero concepts. I'm happy handing those out, and would be thrilled to see where someone else takes the idea, but it wouldn't be the same as playing a known dude like the Human Torch, for example.
Not to get too nitty gritty, but did you guys roll for stats, origin and powers as prescribed in the MSH books or did you reverse engineer characters from pre-existing concepts?
Like Blue Lightening, I am also very likely for Saturday (assuming it is, in fact, SUPER).

There are actually three ways to create characters in FASERIP:
- Imagine an original hero, describe him, and throw some stats together based on common sense
- Roll a guy randomly
- Pick an existing hero with stats, like Spider-Man or Wolverine
On Saturday, Sternum went with method 1, basically saying, "I wanna play the Green Mantis, who is like Shang-Chi, The Master of Kung-Fu, except he has a different costume. And he has a mob contact, Candace Pantaglione—a/k/a Candy Pants!" So we talked a bit about what a super martial artist ought to be able to do - some wire-fu climbing or jumping, maybe a paralyzing strike - and just went with it.
In contrast IO went full random, leading to a guy who has better hand-to-hand fighting skills than anyone in the world, yet is clumsy and weak. But with incredible hunches! We determined he had some kind of accident involving the time-stream, giving him the ability to anticipate others' moves in a fight as well as having dim premonitions of what he should pay attention to, and thus the Chrononaut was born! In play we couldn't exactly reconcile his Sonic Control power, so I'm cool if IO wants to convert it to a Time Control type of thing "as his chronometric powers stabilize."
I do have some pre-gens which, if nobody wants 'em, I'm using as villains. Starspanner and Paper Tiger are examples of these.
From Chrononaut and Green Mantis I most certainly was not assuming we were playing the licensed characters, which I wouldn't have thought of as "pre-gen" anyway, but I guess they are.
Although what was up in the air in my mind was whether you were playing some iteration of the Marvel Universe, and now it's clearer that you're not.
I'd probably like to have a go with Starspanner. Has he/she/it already appeared as npc?
Eventually I'd like to also to a try a speedster. Aside from liking the concept I also try to play one in every super-system as a point of comparison.

Nope! There's a hint that the Starspanner Guild might be hostile to random time travelers like the Chrononaut, but how their local representive handles that policy is up in the air.
note that the Atomic Cowboy and the Monkey King are also available.

In FASERIP, you run really fast. Maybe you can attack a lot. And power-stunt. It's a flexible game but that means there's not a lot of detail…
I'll go with Starspanner, I like what's posted so far. I think I would have him decide that he needs to understand the people better before he comes to a final recommendation, and that should lead to a working relationship.
Any chance of seeing the actual character sheet for him beforehand? And I'm going to stick with the masculine because "him/her/it" is only fun for a little while.
