I am curious to know how many gold pieces are in a pound but also how much a giant can be expected to weigh? Is it likely that Hill Giants weigh less than Frost Giants and Fire Giants?

Gold pieces are 10 to a pound. This is because the gods set the standard, and didn't think much about what size human hands are. Many coins in circulation are more conveniently sized but also aren't pure gold, so on average it takes 1/10 lb of them to amount to as much as an iconic "gold piece".

Hill giants do indeed weigh less: OD&D tells us that hill giants are 12' tall < fire giants, also 12' tall < frost giants, 18' tall. Hill giants have fewer HD than fire giants, so I assume the former are flabby and sloppy while the latter are ripped.
