Carousing for Jarri

Jarri's condition of being afflicted with Tomb Rot is the most important situation for him. If this is something likely to be addressed in-game, he will go back (if possible) to Barrodin, and once physically able, try to impress the dwarves with many barrels of strong drink. With a Charisma of 10 and a Constitution of 15 (making him Super-Stalwart due to his being a Stonebeard, he will try to show his mettle in drinking contests.

If the Tomb Rot is something which is better caroused for, he will try to find whererever a high enough level healer can cure him. He will go there and use his Charisma to petition for restoration. If there is any further opportunity, he will attempt to make allies, perhaps by means of donation to whichever church heals him.

Having been restored and now properly able to carouse, Jarri plans to return to the dwarves with the ale barrels and engage in some heavy drinking. He will, if there's dough leftover, set up targets in the shape of frost giants and hold axe-throwing contests as well. Dex 11 . His aim is to begin to get the dwarves thinking about taking direct action on the giants. He has 900 gp and doesn't mind spending it all (or more) to rise in the eyes of his fellow dwarves.

Can carousing be done at a fixed price? Jarri has but 200 gp on him, so he's thinking of motivating Barragin's dwarves to take a measure of revenge on the goblins who poisoned and dweomered them. He will deliver a rousing speech (Charisma 11) to the dwarves, telling them that they should not take this indignity without retribution. To this end, he will offer a 200 gp gold bounty to the first dwarf who brings him the left hands of a dozen goblins. If a carousing roll is still required (say, if two or three dwarves return to Jarri at the same time), that's fine. Jarri doesn't mind going into debt if it helps to send a message to the goblins, and maybe in the process, take some heat off of Zekon should he send some forces to Zorlac's, depending on how closely in cahoots the Dogballs are with the giants.

If offering the bounty interferes with the dwarves' duties of guarding the caverns, Jarri will instead use the 200 gp to purchase or otherwise begin construction of a heavy catapult (price listed in AD&D DMG). He will present this a gift to Barragin's dwarves, exhorting them that becoming proficient in the use of siege equipment is always a handy skill to have.

OK, looks like he's got 600 gp in total, then. No debt for the bounty, but if Jarri goes ahead with the catapult idea, he may also start looking for a top-notch dwarven blacksmith/armourer he'd like to hire for his/the dwarves' needs.

Jarri spends much of the week, and 500 gp, talking to the various clans Barrogin's dwarves are affiliated with. Some of this goes towards a heavy catapult for Barrogin to help defend the surface approach to the Caves of the Conquered Dark; some goes to presents for the clan heads, to mollify their feelings about the possible repercussions of encouraging the freelance slaughter of sentients; the rest is kept aside for paying the reward, which goes to a surly tunneler named Piran the Steadfast, who says that his necklace of smallish goblin-hands was collected in a grotto a mile west of and beneath Drum Coggo. Your carousing is successful (roll of 9 + 1 bonus for previous carousing with Barrogin's men), and you earn 500 XP.

Some thoughts…

I'm hoping "smallish" here means "Hey, those are smallish hands for humans, maybe they're goblin!" but I fear it's closer to "Those are goblin children's hands, aren't they?" For future reference, do male goblins have Adam's apples? Are the Dogballs Goblins known to be active around the site Piran found? Was the grotto also the likely water source for these goblins?

Do the clan heads know of the nature (i.e. size) of these goblin hands? How many clans is Jarri aware of, how many dwarves in each? How do they feel about the goblins poisoning Barragin's men; where on "dwarves hate goblins" scale are these clans?

Not much is known by the dwarves about the Dogballs. Goblin males have Adam's apples but they're harder to tell what they are; scalps, hands, ears make nice trophies because they dry/cure well and are distinctive.

Jarri knows about five clans, each of which includes hundreds of dwarves. They vary in their hate of goblins, from relative tolerance to a degree of genocidal racism that makes adventurers look good. Where does Jarri stand on this scale? Is he normal in his sentiments, or more liberal/conservative than most?

The clan heads think some of these hands might be children, others might be malnourished; the absence of larger healthy ones might mean this pocket of goblins was able to be caught because it was down on its luck, or it might mean that Piran only managed to catch the weak ones.

Jarri's personal view on goblins is more or less middle of the pack, though his public view of them would depend on whichever tweak on that stance would be most advantageous at the time. Jarri would push the bounty as a success to the more bloodthirsty clans wheras focus that he wanted to target only those goblins responsible for the poisonings, not innocents, to the tolerant clans.

For future reference, does Jarri or Piran have any idea how well those poisonous mushrooms would be, or how much of them would be required, if they wanted to contaminate a water supply with them? This is probably a question best directed at Chrystos, which Jarri will mention the next time they meet.
