fun with tags!

One of my co-DMs went nuts and wrote up pages for all the magic items in our campaign, so he could keep track of what was known about them, who had them, where they were discovered (in case someone used divination to sort them out), etc. Then I whipped up a page that auto-magically adds them if they're tagged with "magic-item". It's pretty neat:

Now whenever someone picks up something magic, the player or DM makes a page for it, tags it with "magic-item" and the tag for the dungeon where it was discovered and KA-POW, we never lose it again.

Like we lost our Rope of Climbing. So sad.

I pretty much copied an article on the wikidot site about the ListPages module. If you check out the source on that page, you'll see something like this:

[[module ListPages separate="no" tags="+magic church-of-strixus"]]
* %%title_linked%%
[[/module]]

The "module ListPages" bit invokes that module, which is built into wikidot. The separate="no" part does something with spacing of the list that I can't remember. The tags bit is the important part. "+magic church-of-strixus" means "sirrah, list me yon pages that possess the tag 'magic' and 'church-of-strixus'"… or something like that.

(The plus sign is a logical AND, but I might have been able to achieve the same things with a space delimited list of the tags I wanted to select for. I can't remember.)

The "%%title_linked%%" specifies which part of the page to show. You can show the author, the tags and some other stuff too. You can also make lists by page type, author, category, etc.

For some reason I'm all hung up on these pages of lists, so I've done one for Retainers that's actually fairly useful (we had a rash of retainers being retained by more than one PC by accident) and another one for Player Characters that's kind of a mess and probably not very useful at all.

I officially envy Redbox Vancouver. It sounds very cool and very much like the Black Peaks campaign.

Only in the sense that players get more XP when their hirelings don't survive the adventure. :)

The retainer abuse has been rampant lately. Partly this is due to our new, de-centralized responsibility for setting continuity, where DMs aren't very good about remembering to enforce consequences for venal player behavior (I am one of the foremost offenders on both sides of the screen). My response was to have the hirelings in Threshold unionize under the protection of a local mercenary company with a fairly ominous reputation, and to jack up the base fees for hiring guys to 25gp per adventure.

Of course the player response has been to hire scabs from outlying villages… when I start DMing again there's going to be some comeuppance!

Wait, you guys play with rotating DM's? That's pretty awesome! Certainly seems challenging in terms of maintaining ongoing mysteries, but sweet implications in terms of shared setting development.

I LOVE the idea of forays into the sticks to recruit ambitions locals to their certain death, I can only imagine the scenes when the weathered adventurers role into a hamlet and start buying drinks and charming local rubes.

We're fiddling with the idea of shanghai'ing (sp?) goblins and such into our death march, good times! We tried simply loading a goblin with heaps of oil to toss, but that ended in an untimely and smokey disaster, but tons of potential in general for savvy management of henchies, thrown items, polearms, etc.

I'd be willing to rotate-DM a third campaign, if there's enough interest. The Glantri campaign might threaten to spill over 10 people some games, but it hasn't gotten there yet.

I am also, long-term, interested in DMing an on-going campaign, perhaps a 1st ed. AD&D, fairly much because that's much more familiar to me, although it wanders away from the site mandate. I want to play under Eric a bit more before really considering it. I have ideas forming but haven't done it in years. Eric's very good and I know Tavis is, too; so the bar is high.
