The remorse and loneliness of Sargasso Sector awaits!
The two Red Box games so far have been iffy, but I have faith — plus a good idea. I have been using the modern Mongoose Traveller rules, but now I am fed up and reject them. Except for the the few good bits. The best bit, which seduced me into going for the whole thing, is the skill/task resolution. It's clean and clear, and far superior to Classic Traveller's weird overly specific rules/rulings. Everybody understands it and there's some richness to the results of simple die rolls.
But the mongoose subsystems built from it, like combat, starship combat, trade, character creation … uniformly disappointing.
So I've adapted the Classic Traveller chargen to be less of a minigame and more of a solid routine that approaches my original goal of 5 minute characters. I've trimmed the CT skill list, dumped the people skills of later books and editions, and will go with CT methods for everything from trade to combat (weapon vs. armor tables and all, which I used to decry) to ship design.
In upcoming games you're welcome to roll up a new character or convert your existing character (probably losing some skills that we don't need). CT subsystems are much simpler, but they are still strategically deep and time tested.
The point of all this is simply to work with a sleeker set of rules that people can easily pick up and use to get themselves into interesting messes.
I'd love to get something biweekly or so going if there's interest. Tuesdays and Thursdays are out for me, but otherwise …
So here's some possible dates:
sat 1/16 afternoon or evening
sun 1/17 late afternoon or evening
Mon 1/18 eve
Wed 1/20 eve
Fri 1/22 eve
