I have a difficult time imagining something more irresponsible than this, assuming his mom really is in some kind of financial hardship.
Someone on the RPG.Net thread worked out he'd be making $15 an hour, which is nothing to sneeze at… but the expected value has to be much closer to 15 cents. If you had 36 hours a week in which to work, the certainty of making $7.15 under NY's minimum wage law vs. near-certain odds of earning $0 with this project, suggests strongly that he's wasting his time and endangering his family's security. Given his other borderline-delusional claims, it kinda looks like someone who's either making up a sob-story for sympathy, or who (confronted with a genuine problem) would rather retreat into comforting implausibilities.
I also think that, generally speaking, the pull of an RPG isn't the play itself, but rather the social atmosphere engendered through play. Frankly, he doesn't seem like the kind of guy I'd ever want to interact with.
I'm sorry if anyone got food poisoning because of my Dungeon-Mastering. It's a poorly regulated industry.
