In mid-December, Neutral Ground was closing up, and I was hanging on some other NYC D&D internet sites (Pathfinder Society, NYC D&D Meetup) hoping to recruit some more people into Red Box. These groups were gnashing their teeth over the closure of Neutral Ground.

I wanted to be helpful and establish some goodwill between our group and theirs, so I mentioned Cafe 28.

This was probably a huge mistake, as it looks like the NYC D&D Meetup crowd is going to be descending on the place on Wednesday nights, and the Pathfinders will probably be doing the same.

This doesn't necessarily screw us at first, because Cafe 28 is fairly spacious. But those gamers will know other gamers, and before too long it's going to turn into Neutral Ground 2 up there.

The good news is that we'll probably get some new recruits - and find new people to play 4e or 3e with - but the bad news is that it's going to be hard to find space.

And we already have to contend with the GURPS group and the pyramid scheme junkies!

So, we fight for the big table. Let's hope the Neutral Grounds Magic posse don't descend on us aswell. Imagine the queue for the bathroom this is going to cause.

My only worry is that Cafe 28 is not well-disposed to the idea. We kind of operate under the radar. I assume the '2 hours' limit was posted to have some legal recourse to punting vagrants rather than the next group up the food chain, gamers.

I'd mentioned Cafe 28 as a potential alternate venue for a campaign that Mark (yoda8myhead) is part of, and he's very active in the Pathfinder Society, so it wasn't just you. How did you discover it in the first place? (Or those GURPS guys?)

I've seen several other business-y groups, like the pyramid scheme guys, gathering there, so I have to think that accepting groups is part of the owner's strategy. It's not like all that upstairs seating area is meant to be overflow seating. (Well, maybe it is during the lunch rush, but at the hours we're there, having us playing at their ample table space means they sell stuff they wouldn't otherwise, without having to turn people away 'cause there's nowhere to sit.)

I think someone on nerdnyc found it. I also think finding another all hours deli with upstairs seating shouldn't be difficult.

I was walking from the 6 train to Café 28 Monday night and noticed two or three very similar delis, so there are options if we ever feel the need to abandon ship.
