I just flipped through the Caverns of Thracia (in PDF form).

HOLY HELL that is a big module. We barely got to half the stuff in it - and that's only because we had some super-cheesy secret-door-detecting magic weapons helping us out. What a crazy, crazy place!

I will scan the salamander picture tonight. Chris, I encourage you to have Chrystos carouse to get this image as a tattoo.

Readers of Fight On! may judge Javi's skill as a draftsman - he has two illustrations in the last issue, although I think he's gotten better since then. He likes doing this kind of drawing, although typically his creations will need to wait until you are higher level.

Tavis, on Saturday you mentioned that Javi had drawn a picture of the Salamander which I heroically distracted.

I think it would be awesome if Javi illustrated a lot of the monsters we fought, and then you could show it to us. (a) Because allows time to be spent with the kid, and (b) unless Javi's a very talented 8 year old draftsman, it creates a definite "What WAS that thing?" moment.

+2 sword of dragon-slaying

This seems like a direct invitation from Tavis to further investigate Scatha, the black dragon that seems to be the most formidable monster-foe in the region.

If Lotur takes the sword of dragon-slaying, that just frees up one or more magical weapons for other members of the party, right? Lotur, you have been using a +1 sword or a +1 dagger or both, right? Either way we now have a magical weapon for Merselon, if he does not weild one already.

Not to be too egalitarian and all, but at this point pretty much every fighting man in the party should be able to have a magic weapon at every session. And we now have (I think?) three magic suits of armor (Ookla and his wooden chain of ancient goodness; John Fighter and the +1 plate, and the new magic armor you got last session).

The combination of this means we should have at least 2 fighters in magical plate, weilding magic swords. At (John Fighter) also has a magic shield. With AC like that - and the extra hit dice that come with level 6, for some of you - you can actually start going toe-to-toe with several opponents…
<chortle>

It didn't kick our ass. It showed up, and for a few seconds everybody done lost their minds. But then:

we stole all of its treasure

without losing a single man

withdrew to a place literally next door which it cannot follow

and made it think one of our major enemies was to blame.

That is pretty much the 0e Dungeons & Dragons version of Flawless Victory. Short of urinating on it, I'm not sure what more we could have done.

EDIT:Oh, wait! I know! We could have

Killed its high priest

and desecrated its altar

And we did that, too. /EDIT

(Admittedly, Tavis ret-conned that we couldn't shovel the gold up as fast as we hoped - which I think is quite sensible - but for a few moments there we had completely and totally humiliated that thing. I am too polite to suggest we deserve XP for the encounter.)

Arnold has impersonated a god once or twice in his misfortunate career, and is a little offended that some iguana with a pituitary disorder would presume to practice the same deceit on him.

EDIT: By my recollection, the absolutely critical part of the escape plan - the Protection from Evil spell - was Greengoat's idea and he deserves credit for it.

I had assumed that the God of Potiphar's quest was Thanatos the Dark One.

I call bullshit on the Lizard King being a god. It's probably just a special type of Mummy or something. Lizard Men ain't bad folk, but they aren't known for their theological subtlety.

Screw him and screw his stubby little wings. I don't care how fast you flap 'em, dude - if you cannot detect invisible at will, you're not a god any adventurer should worry about.

With a decent complement of Magic-Users and Clerics we could totally take that dude. Our gang of 8-10 guys around 4-5th level is like a group of 4-5 guys of 8-10th level, plus we've got a large number of Human and Dwarven mercenaries. We are cruising through this dungeon - we've decimated every foe we've encountered. (Bags of treasure, however, still await Name Level.)

Let's re-murder that undead freak and take his ton of gold!

I vote we make this our first priority (after making sure we can still run away to the Nameless City if I'm wrong.) As our second priority, I vote we convert the Lizard Men into proper worship of the Boss!

Also, what was that weird extra-planar shape-shifting, ammonia & cinnamon freezing gas emitting, level-draining thing?
Not to expect actual answers or anything, but:

1) Something the Lizard God summoned with a spell.

2) Deities and Demigods teaches us that even divine Apollo has hit points and an armor class, so the distinction is unclear. One thing of note is that poor Potiphar Twice-Shy led the original expedition this way seeking the blood of a god. Of course, he may have been misled that such a thing was present in the Lost City, or that this is the Lost City he was thinking of.

A thread for discussing weird monsters and/or magical items we can't identify by other means.

1. What was that weird electric floating brain?

2. Is the Lizard God, like, an actual god of some kind? Or just a scary undead weirdo? I can totally imagine the Lizard Men foolishly worshipping a Lich-Mummy-Thing, believing it's an extra-dimensional deity.
