G157: Writing With Rats

Summary

Under the aegis of the wizard "Zolobachai of the Nine Visions" (secretly Arnold Littleworth) and the dwarven swashbuckler Blackjack Dusseldorf (famed in song and story for lifting the curse of Brakhill), a party of less-experienced adventurers gathered to try the Chateau d'Ambreville.

After briefly exploring a first-level chamber lined with mosaics depicting Glantri City and the lands around, the party headed south to explore near the lair of the lich Marsile. There they encountered another party of the strange rat-folk the Company had encountered before, with their tiny cloaks and swords and their incomprehensible high-pitched voices. But this time the Company achieved a breakthrough — they figured out that they could communicate with the rats through writing! Offers of cheese were gratefully accepted by the rats, who reciprocated by answering various questions about their limited knowledge of the Chateau's dungeons.

Upon learning of libraries deeper beneath the Chateau, the young magic-user Ursuline persuaded her companions to try the uppermost of them, a library on the fourth level of the dungeon. A party of rats led the adventurers thither. There they found gnawed doors and furniture, and caught glimpses of giant termites. But the insects had yet to successfully consume the books in the library stacks. The reason for this? The undead wraith of a librarian haunted the stacks, and it struck ruthlessly at Arnold Littleworth, draining his life-essence!

While the rest of the party fled, the thief Sammie concealed herself in the stacks for looting purposes, the hireling Frederic tried to turn the wraith (and failed, and died), and Arnold — who had managed to antagonize the wraith — led the thing away from the party into unknown territory. Barely staying ahead of its grasp, he fled through a dining hall full of corpses where another undead creature at the head of the table invited him to join them for supper, then back around through another door into the library. Accompanied by Sammie, Arnold led the pair back to the surface by memory.

Losses and Loot

The party defeated no monsters and acquired a handful of non-magical books and scrolls.

All told each of the participants received 141gp and 0xp per character.
