"This is a game that is fun. It helps you imagine."

Who are we?

We're a bunch of gamers who live in New York City. We're students, artists, web designers, lawyers, teachers, parents, and spouses. Once a month or so, we get together on a casual basis to play Dungeons & Dragons, the nerdiest (and best) game of all time. Basically we're hanging out, having a good time playing a silly game.

Why are we doing this?

Gary Gygax, who with Dave Arneson invented Dungeons & Dragons in the early 1970s, passed away in March, 2008. Gygax, for all his quirks, had a huge effect on our childhoods, and though we'd never met the man, we wanted to pay our respects by breaking out the old game we loved so well back when we were kids. So a date was set, ancient copies of the scarlet Basic Dungeons & Dragons manual from the 1980's were brought back into the light and soon the funny-shaped dice were hitting the table.

Turns out, though, that the reason we loved the old game is because it's incredibly fun. What started out as a nostalgic day-trip down memory lane turned out better than any of us had any right to expect, so we're toying with the idea of playing at least a couple more sessions, until we all get bored and move on to other pastimes.

Why would anyone play Dungeons & Dragons?

Because it kicks ass. There are a lot of versions of the game, but this particular version (the basic beginners set that came packaged in a distinctive red box, hence the name of this wiki) is pretty much cover-to-cover perfect: I defy anyone to play this game and have a bad time. Written by Tom Moldvay around 1980-81, it is now out of print, but an eBay search should find a bunch for like US$5. An almost identical version written by Frank Mentzer a few years later is a little more user-friendly.

Can I play with you guys?

Sure! Swing on by the forum, and ask to join in. The more the merrier. (Translation: we want to give our homicidal, bloodthirsty enemies more targets, and it's always good to have someone else to carry some of the loot.)
